$1.76 million verdict,representing the estate of Jose F. Escano-Reyes

Brad Sohn of the Brad Sohn Law Firm, obtained a $1.76 million verdict, representing the estate of Jose F. Escano-Reyes. Mr. Escano-Reyes was an illegal immigrant who was caught driving without a license and committed suicide just days before his pre-trial hearing while in jail.

The estate sued Santa Rosa County Sheriff Bob Johnson and several employees, including two deputies, in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Florida.

The dispute in the Escano-Reyes case was over the alleged failure of the sheriff’s office to properly supervise the criminal defendant, whom deputies held as a pretrial detainee.

Escano- Reyes was suffering from a deteriorating mental state which allowed him to be put on suicide watch.Deputies and staff allegedly did not perform the correct monitoring procedures that would have prevented Escano-Reyes from hanging himself—on his 10th attempt that day.

The jury denied awarding punitive damages to the Escano-Reyes’ estate from Johnson, the county sheriff, as well as several employees of the sheriff’s office.
