Intel is told to pay $2.18 billion after losing a patent trial
Morgan Chu of the Irell & Manella firm, won a trial in which Intel Corp. was told to pay VLSI Technology $2.18 billion .This is one of the largest patent-damages awards in the U.S.
The jury awarded $1.5 billion for infringement of one patent and $675 million for infringement of the second. Intel’s contention that a patent was invalid because it claimed work done by Intel engineers was not accepted by the jury.
Chu said, “ Federal law doesn’t require someone to know of a patent to be found to have infringed it, and Intel purposely didn’t look to see whether it was using someone else’s inventions.”
