LA Jury Awards $49.6 Million Verdict for a CHP Officer Injured in a Motorcycle Accident
A Los Angeles jury awarded $49.6 million to a California Highway Patrol (CHP) officer who was severely injured on the 5 Freeway while attempting to pull a driver over.
While on duty, Officer Eric Bejar was attempting to make an enforcement stop on the 5 Freeway near Honor Ranch Road in Los Angeles. However, the defendant was driving behind the vehicle Eric was attempting to pull over and she failed to slow down properly and allow him to do his job. As a result, her right front bumper struck Eric’s rear wheel, causing him to lose control of the motorcycle, fall onto the freeway and sprawl out onto the road.
During the roughly two-week trial, attorneys Khail Parris and R. Rex Parris of the PARRIS LAW FIRM highlighted the defendant’s negligence in her driving, Eric’s exemplary record as a CHP officer and the severity of his injuries.
“Eric’s life will never be the same,” said attorney Khail Parris. “He’s going to need medical care for the foreseeable future, he’s undergone several procedures and his wife has borne the burden of helping him care for those injuries. This verdict will go a long way toward helping them rebuild their life.”
“Officers like Eric Bejar patrol our freeways, highways and roads to help keep them safe and secure, but in this instance a careless driver ignored her duty to let him do his job,” said attorney R. Rex Parris. “This verdict will hopefully alert EVERY driver on the roads that CHP officers deserve the opportunity to safely do their job protecting the rest of us.”
